Fruit Platter

Fruit Platter

Delight your family and friends – place a  fruit platter  with cheese and biscuits in front of them. Attractive food presentation need not only apply when you're entertaining. We often put out a fruit platter  with cheese and biscuits as a weekend midday snack. This is a simple dish but has become a family activity. We put out the fruit platter  with its accompaniments and spend leisurely, quality time together whilst picking at the delights in front of us.

The Fruit Platter

The children enjoy participating in what has now become 'the ritual'. They are responsible for making sure that all the fruit ingredients are appropriately selected for their freshness and color. Some of the fruit is then sliced for presentation and easy taking. This is then carefully arranged so that the platter becomes a tempting tray for healthy picking.

As I've said, color plays an important role in tempting the appetite. A selection of color and taste could include such fruits as apples, pineapple, green and red grapes, strawberries, mangoes, pears, cherries and peaches. Use the top of the pineapple as a garnish decoration and arrange the sliced fruit in a pattern around the pineapple top, or create a pattern of your own. Garnishing any platter takes no time our trouble and always adds a touch of flair. Other garnishing options include a sprig of mint, rose petals or nasturtiums (use their flowers and leaves).

The Fruit Platter Accompaniments

While the children are busy preparing the fruit, mom and dad are raiding the fridge for the cheese and any other accompaniments we may find. Cheddar, brie, camembert, blue, cheese wedges you name it. This becomes even more tempting if set out attractively on a platter with some savory snack biscuits.

Hint: Try eating the fruit with the cheese for a different, delightful taste.

Other accompaniments for your fruit platter  include olives, gherkins (pickles), pickled onions, thinly sliced cucumber, tomato, crispy carrots and any left over cold meat. When entertaining, present a fruit platter  with a selection of cheese and biscuits and any other accompaniments you have as a pre- or after- dinner dish. Your guests will love its refreshing lightness.

Be Creative: Of course, a fruit platter , especially when served with all its accompaniments, can turn into a costly dish. This doesn't have to be so. Use what you have available. Be creative. It's really not about what's on the platter. It's more about the creative effort you put into it.
